What's In A Name

According to Mrs. Batson, Dixie was named after a daughter born in the area. I found several mentions of Dixie Jordan. She was born February 22, 1888 to Colonel John W. Jordan. The Dixie post office was opened on May 10, 1898. It was changed 7 years later to Dix on March 20, 1905. This change was made to avoid confusion with (Little) Dixie, OK in Stephens County in Southeastern Oklahoma. It was located within the General Store. The post office was closed almost 9 months later in December 14, 1905. Introduction

I live in Dixie, Oklahoma. It is a ghost town located about 7 miles south-southeast of Cleveland, OK. This town was essentially bought out by the Army Corp of Engineers to build Keystone Lake. I have started this page as a homage to one of the residents that had lived here the longest. Mrs. Donna Batson. She passed away this morning, October 9th, 2017. She was 94 years old. If it wasn't for her and her family, I wouldn't have known or cared about Dixie. I will post as much information as I can gather so this Oklahoma place is never forgotten.
