What's In A Name

According to Mrs. Batson, Dixie was named after a daughter born in the area. I found several mentions of Dixie Jordan. She was born February 22, 1888 to Colonel John W. Jordan.

The Dixie post office was opened on May 10, 1898. It was changed 7 years later to Dix on March 20, 1905. This change was made to avoid confusion with (Little) Dixie, OK in Stephens County in Southeastern Oklahoma. It was located within the General Store.
The post office was closed almost 9 months later in December 14, 1905.

According to Mrs. Batson and her son, Dixie only had that post office located inside a general store, a school, and 2 churches (a Baptist and Non-Denominational). They also had a cemetery that was relocated in the early 1960's before the lake was filled. There are still a few burial markers located on Army Corp property along the lake shore.
Dixie and Bear Creek Cemetery is located approximately 1 mile south of Cleveland, OK on Highway 64.

Half of the original townsite is government owned and partially under Keystone Lake. Mrs. Batson kept much of the remaining private lands around it. Cowskin Bay North boat ramp is along the northern edge of Dixie. The road leading in from Highway 64 is aptly named Dixie Road.
